  • Made with simple whole-food ingredients
  • Ready in about 20 minutes
  • Perfect for breakfast, snacks, and desserts
  • Freezer friendly
  • A wonderful way to use fresh apples and pears

Best of all, there are no preservatives or unnecessary ingredients—just fruit, citrus, and gentle warming spice.

The Magic of Apples and Pears

Apples are wonderful on their own, but pears add something extra.

They bring a delicate sweetness and buttery texture that make this sauce especially silky and fragrant. Together, apples and pears create a softer, more complex flavor than either fruit could achieve alone.

Fresh orange and lemon brighten everything beautifully, while cinnamon adds warmth without overpowering the fruit.

For me, cinnamon should never dominate. Like all good spices, it should simply invite the other ingredients to shine.

Ingredients You’ll Need

One of the loveliest things about this recipe is how uncomplicated it is.

You’ll need:

  • Apples (Gala, Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Pink Lady all work beautifully)
  • Pears (Bosc or Bartlett are excellent choices)
  • Fresh orange zest and juice
  • Fresh lemon zest and juice
  • Pure maple syrup
  • Ground cinnamon

That’s it.

No butter.

No refined sugar.

No artificial ingredients.

Just simple pantry staples transformed into something wonderfully comforting.

How to Make Homemade Apple Pear Sauce

This recipe couldn’t be easier.

  1. Peel, core, and chop the apples and pears into evenly sized pieces.
  2. Add the fruit to a saucepan along with the citrus zest, juice, maple syrup, and cinnamon.
  3. Bring everything to a gentle simmer.
  4. Cover and cook for about 10–15 minutes until the fruit is completely tender.
  5. Lightly mash with a potato masher or whisk for a rustic texture, or blend until perfectly smooth if you prefer.

The fruit releases plenty of its own juices as it cooks, so there’s no need to add water. If the mixture begins to look a little dry, simply stir in another splash of fresh orange juice.

Make It Your Own

This recipe is wonderfully versatile.

Try adding:

  • A pinch of ground ginger
  • A tiny pinch of cloves
  • Ground cardamom
  • Allspice
  • Fresh vanilla bean or vanilla extract
  • A strip of orange peel while cooking

Personally, I love keeping it beautifully simple and letting the fruit be the star.

The Best Ways to Enjoy Apple Pear Sauce

This is one of those recipes that finds its way into almost every meal.

Serve it:

  • Swirled into warm oatmeal
  • Over Greek or plant-based yogurt
  • Alongside pancakes or waffles
  • Spooned over chia pudding
  • With granola
  • As a topping for baked oatmeal
  • With roasted pork or holiday dinners (if you serve meat)
  • On your Thanksgiving table
  • Warm over vanilla ice cream
  • Straight from the spoon!

One of my favorite breakfasts is a generous spoonful stirred through creamy oatmeal. It transforms an ordinary bowl of oats into something that feels comforting, nourishing, and just a little bit special.

Is Homemade Apple Pear Sauce Healthy?

Absolutely.

Apples and pears are naturally rich in fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin C. Because this recipe relies on the fruit for most of its sweetness, there’s very little added maple syrup—and you can even leave it out entirely if your fruit is especially ripe.

Fresh citrus brightens the flavors naturally, while cinnamon adds warmth without needing extra sugar.

It’s wholesome comfort food at its very best.

Storage Tips

One batch rarely lasts long in my kitchen, but if you’re lucky enough to have leftovers:

  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and stir before serving.

It tastes delicious both warm and cold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freeze homemade apple pear sauce?

Yes! It freezes beautifully for up to three months, making it perfect for meal prep.

Do I have to peel the apples?

Peeling gives the smoothest texture, but if you’re using organic apples and don’t mind a slightly more rustic sauce, you can certainly leave the skins on.

Can I make it without maple syrup?

Absolutely. If your apples and pears are naturally sweet, the maple syrup is completely optional.

Which apples are best for applesauce?

Gala, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady, and McIntosh all make wonderful applesauce. Mixing two varieties creates even more depth of flavor.

A Little Plant Magic

Some recipes are complicated. This isn’t one of them.

It’s simply fruit, citrus, and spice slowly transforming together over gentle heat.

The fragrance drifting through the kitchen is every bit as lovely as the finished sauce, reminding us that some of the most comforting foods come from the simplest ingredients.

Whether you’re making this on a crisp autumn afternoon, preparing for Thanksgiving, or adding a spoonful to tomorrow morning’s oatmeal, this Homemade Apple Pear Sauce celebrates the quiet magic of seasonal cooking.

Sometimes the simplest recipes become the ones we return to year after year.
