Is chocolate really good for you?

Yes!!! Here are the reasons why:

  • Rich in Antioxidants: Dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants, including flavonoids and polyphenols, which can help reduce inflammation and protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  • Heart Health: Consuming moderate amounts of dark chocolate has been associated with several heart health benefits. Flavonoids in dark chocolate may help improve blood flow, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Improved Cholesterol Levels: Some studies suggest that dark chocolate consumption may increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels and decrease LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels, which can help improve overall cholesterol profile.
  • Better Brain Function: The flavonoids in dark chocolate may also improve cognitive function and help protect against age-related cognitive decline. Dark chocolate has been linked to better memory, focus, and overall brain health.
  • Mood Enhancement: Dark chocolate contains compounds like phenylethylamine and serotonin, which can promote feelings of happiness and well-being. Additionally, consuming dark chocolate may stimulate the release of endorphins, which can help reduce stress and improve mood.
  • Improved Blood Sugar Control: While dark chocolate contains sugar, it has a lower glycemic index compared to milk chocolate and other sugary treats. Consuming dark chocolate in moderation may have less impact on blood sugar levels, making it a better option for those with diabetes or those looking to manage blood sugar levels.
  • Skin Health: Some research suggests that the flavonoids in dark chocolate may help protect the skin from UV damage, improve skin hydration, and increase blood flow to the skin, resulting in a healthier complexion.
  • Rich in Nutrients: Dark chocolate is a good source of several essential nutrients, including iron, magnesium, copper, and manganese. These minerals play important roles in various bodily functions, such as energy production, bone health, and immune function.

Happily, the consensus seems to be a small amount of good-quality dark chocolate is beneficial.

What about the flavorings?

There are all sorts of lovely options. To make it a little more of a special occasion dessert you could add a tablespoon of the following in step 1 when you heat the milk and cocoa:

  • Grand-Marnier
  • Brandy
  • Rum

For non-alcoholic flavorings try:

  • a pinch of ground cinnamon
  • orange zest
  • instant coffee granules
  • a pinch of ground cardamon
